African Scientists Urged to Lead Solutions to Continent's Pressing Challenges

At the seventh African Scientific Research and Innovation Council (ASRIC) Congress in Zanzibar, Tanzania, African scientists were called upon to spearhead solutions to the continent's critical challenges, including food insecurity, energy deficits, climate change, and health crises. The congress emphasized the urgent need for science-driven, homegrown strategies tailored to Africa’s unique realities.

In his keynote address, Ahmed Hamdy, Executive Director of the African Union Scientific and Technical Research Commission (AUSTRC) and ASRIC, highlighted the pivotal role of researchers in transforming Africa’s future. “Africa faces complex challenges that require innovative, science-based solutions tailored to our realities,” Hamdy stated. “This is a moment for African scientists to lead transformational efforts that reshape our economies and societies.”

ASRIC, a key advisory body under the African Union, aims to foster collaboration among researchers and leverage science, technology, and innovation (STI) as tools for sustainable development. Hamdy underscored the council's efforts to create a robust scientific network that empowers African nations to tackle their most pressing issues.

Amos Nungu, Director-General of Tanzania’s Commission for Science and Technology, reinforced the call for action, emphasizing the need to strengthen local research capabilities. “The recent COVID-19 pandemic reminded us of the indispensable role science plays in shaping humanity,” Nungu said. “We need more African researchers equipped to tackle our challenges and unlock the continent’s immense potential.”

The congress focused on advancing STI across Africa by exploring strategies to build capacity, foster innovation ecosystems, and enhance cross-border collaboration. Key discussions included boosting investment in STEM education, integrating research into public policy frameworks, and creating innovation-driven economies.

A recurring theme was the necessity for African-led solutions to ensure cultural, economic, and environmental alignment. Delegates stressed that addressing immediate crises while planning for long-term development requires innovative thinking from within the continent.

The event concluded with a renewed commitment to harness STI as a driving force for Africa’s transformation. Participants envisioned a future where Africa leads globally in scientific and technological advancements, leveraging its innovations to solve pressing challenges and achieve sustainable growth.
