The World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Africa (AFRO) is inviting applications for membership in its African Advisory Committee on Health Research and Development (AACHRD). This multidisciplinary committee, established in 1979, provides strategic guidance to the WHO Regional Director on health research and development policies aimed at improving health outcomes across the African continent.
The AACHRD plays a pivotal role in setting the region’s health research agenda and fostering knowledge dissemination to address public health challenges. By bringing together leading experts from various disciplines, the committee provides evidence-based recommendations to tackle some of the most pressing health issues in Africa.
WHO is seeking professionals with advanced expertise in fields such as epidemiology, health economics, biomedical research, public health, digital health, biomedical engineering, and behavioural sciences, including gender and human rights. Eligible candidates must hold an advanced degree—such as a PhD, MD, or MPH—and possess a minimum of 10 years of professional experience in health research, policy, or related fields. A demonstrated track record of peer-reviewed publications and experience serving on advisory committees are also highly valued qualifications.
The committee aims to reflect the diversity of the African region by encouraging applications from professionals of different geographic, economic, and cultural backgrounds. WHO has underscored the importance of gender balance and strongly encourages applications from both male and female candidates.
Selected members will serve an initial three-year term, with the possibility of a single renewal. Members are expected to actively contribute to the committee's initiatives, including attending annual in-person meetings and participating in ongoing discussions and activities.
Serving on the AACHRD offers a unique opportunity for professionals to influence health research and development strategies in Africa. Members will contribute to shaping policies and fostering innovation to address the continent's unique public health challenges.
Applications for the AACHRD are now open, presenting a chance for qualified experts to make a meaningful impact on the future of health research and policy in Africa.
