
South Africa’s University of KwaZulu-Natal is the highest ranked young University in Africa in 2019 by the Times New Higher Education (THE) and was positioned 85 worldwide. Hong Kong University of Science and Technology maintained its place as the best young university in the world.
The Young University Rankings ranks the world’s best universities that are aged 50 years and below, by evaluating them based on achievements in their core business of learning, research, knowledge transfer and international connections.
The efficiency metrics are categorized into five wide fields including teaching -the learning environment, research- in terms of volume, income and reputation, citations-based on research influence, International outlook -staff, students and research and Industry income-knowledge transfer.
A total of 351 universities were ranked this year, up from 250 in 2018 and only a few universities in Africa made it to the list including 3 from South Africa, 12 from Egypt, 1 from Kenya, 1 from Nigeria and 1 from Tanzania.
