South Korea’s Kyungdong University is spending up to US$1.39 million in the next 4 years in a scholarship programme meant to benefit a total of 30 undergraduate students from the East African region, in an initiative it is undertaking in partnership with the Inter-University Council of East Africa (IUCEA).
The university which is a private institution accredited by the Korean government will sponsor the students at Kyungdong University Global campus over study periods of four years in a deal that will last over the next five years.
Students will enrol for undergraduate degrees in Smart Computing, Hotel Management, and Business Administration, according to an announcement by the IUCEA.
Under the deal sealed in an MOU with the IUCEA, up to 30 scholarships will be available each year for the next four years each valued at not more than US$10,000 in tuition fees a year, paid for by the institution.
The university will additionally pay US$1,600 a year in accommodation fees over the study period, while the IUCEA provide for the return air ticket at the beginning and end of every two years.
Additionally, the regional universities lobby will provide health insurance valued at USD 200 per year, while parents of the lucky students will meet extra living expenses estimated at US$200 a month.
This scholarship will be awarded to citizens and residents of the East African Community partner states of Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda, with each country a total of five slots.
Applicants are expected to have completed the pre-university level with excellent results with subject areas and a combination of mathematics and English.
They should also have minimum grades of B in Mathematics and English. Applicants will be required to be proficient in English and not more than 22 years of age. The deadline for applications is 25 March 2019.
