Grand Challenges Canada (GCC), in partnership with the Science for Africa Foundation (SFA Foundation), the Global Grand Challenges Network, and The Geneva Learning Foundation, has unveiled a groundbreaking global survey aimed at exploring the intricate link between climate change and public health.
This ambitious initiative targets community health workers, nurses, physicians, researchers, and policymakers in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The survey seeks to capture localized perspectives on critical health issues intensified by climate change, including heat-related illnesses, vector- and water-borne diseases, malnutrition, and mental health impacts.
The effort is supported by a vast network of dissemination partners, including globally influential foundations, health organizations, and academic institutions. These partners, such as the Gates Foundation, Wellcome Trust, Rockefeller Foundation, and UNICEF, ensure the survey’s global reach and engagement.
Beyond quantitative data, the initiative incorporates qualitative insights gathered during a global convening of healthcare professionals. These findings will be critically evaluated by a panel of climate and health experts convened by Grand Challenges Canada. Together, they will identify and prioritize the most pressing climate-related health challenges.
The resulting publication will be shared as a public good, offering a valuable resource for policymakers, researchers, funders, and community leaders. It aims to guide investments and initiatives in addressing climate-sensitive health issues, particularly in vulnerable regions.
Building on these insights, the initiative will lay the foundation for a Climate and Health Grand Challenge. This challenge aims to galvanize global efforts by mobilizing funding and research to develop innovative solutions that tackle the identified health challenges exacerbated by climate change.
“This initiative represents a vital step toward understanding and addressing the profound impact of climate change on health systems,” said a spokesperson for Grand Challenges Canada. “By leveraging diverse perspectives and fostering collaboration, we hope to drive meaningful action and innovation.”
As climate change continues to heighten global health risks, initiatives like the Climate and Health Grand Challenge are essential for mobilizing strategic, evidence-based responses. By uniting stakeholders across regions and disciplines, this effort aspires to build resilience and promote sustainable health solutions in the face of a changing climate.
