The Association of African Universities (AAU) has urged higher education institutions across Africa to commemorate African Universities’ Day 2024 by focusing on building resilient, inclusive, and lifelong learning systems. The week-long celebrations, scheduled for November 11-15, 2024, coincide with the AAU’s 57th anniversary and will highlight the theme, “Educate an African fit for the 21st Century: Building resilient education systems for increased access to inclusive, lifelong, quality, and relevant learning in Africa.”

This year’s theme is timely, as 2024 has been designated the African Year of Education, reflecting a continent-wide push to reform education. The African Union’s initiatives and outcomes from the 2022 UN Summit on Transforming Education have emphasized the need for future-ready education systems to tackle 21st-century challenges.

AAU Secretary General, Prof. Olusola Oyewole, stressed the critical role of universities in Africa’s growth. “Higher education institutions are vital for the success of our education systems and the growth of all sectors. African governments and development partners must continue their support to strengthen education,” he said.

The virtual 2024 celebrations will feature live-streamed panel discussions on AAU TV and social media, alongside campus-based seminars, debates, and exhibitions. This year’s African Universities’ Day aims to inspire efforts to reshape and fortify higher education across the continent.
