The prestigious Royal Society Rising Star Africa Prize 2025 has officially opened its call for applications, offering early-career scientists across the continent a chance to gain recognition for their pioneering contributions to the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences. Established in memory of the late Professor Paul O’Brien FRS, the annual award honours his commitment to fostering scientific excellence and education in Africa.

Designed to spotlight emerging scientific talent, the prize provides a significant boost to researchers through a £14,000 research grant. This funding can be utilized to support ongoing projects, purchase vital equipment, or establish collaborative networks. Winners also receive a £1,000 personal honorarium, further acknowledging their exceptional achievements.

To qualify, applicants must be African citizens who earned their PhDs within the past 15 years, with accommodations made for career breaks. The eligibility criteria ensure that the prize supports individuals at pivotal points in their academic trajectories. Additionally, the Royal Society allows nominations to remain valid for three cycles, increasing the chances for outstanding candidates to gain recognition.
