AAS Director Dr. Peggy Oti-Boateng Elected to American Academy of Arts and Sciences



Dr. Peggy Oti-Boateng, Executive Director of the African Academy of Sciences (AAS), has been named an International Honorary Member of the prestigious American Academy of Arts and Sciences. The recognition announced recently, celebrates her groundbreaking work in science, technology, and innovation (STI) and her leadership in promoting sustainable development across Africa.

Founded in 1780, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences is one of the most respected honorary societies worldwide, bringing together leaders from various fields to address pressing global challenges. Dr. Oti-Boateng’s election is a testament to her dedication to advancing scientific policy and capacity-building efforts across Africa.

“I am deeply honoured to be elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. This recognition is for the entire African scientific community, which is making significant strides in using science to drive development,” Dr. Oti-Boateng said.

Her election aligns her with a group of prominent global figures such as Albert Einstein and Nelson Mandela, underscoring her role in driving scientific collaboration between African and American researchers. Through programs like the African Post-Doctoral Training Initiative (APTI) and the African Research Initiative for Scientific Excellence (ARISE), Dr. Oti-Boateng has been instrumental in fostering innovation and nurturing early-career researchers.

With over 40 years of experience, Dr. Oti-Boateng continues to champion policies that place African scientists at the forefront of addressing global challenges such as climate change, public health, and food security.
