The Africa-Europe Cluster of Research Excellence in Mathematics (CoRE-Math) has been launched as the latest addition to the Africa-Europe Clusters of Research Excellence initiative. This collaboration, led by the African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) and The Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities (The Guild), aims to meet the growing demand for highly skilled mathematicians in academia and industry.
As the 21st Cluster of Research Excellence (CoRE), CoRE-Math will focus on developing a collaborative PhD program that offers sustainable, high-quality mathematics training. The program aligns with the African Union-European Union Innovation Agenda and supports the EU’s Global Gateway strategy and the African Union’s Agenda 2063. The partnership includes 16 organizations from 12 countries, including universities and private industry representatives.
Building on the success of the Eastern Africa Universities Mathematics Programme (EAUMP), which has been rebranded as the Europe Africa Universities Mathematics Programme, CoRE-Math plans to expand its reach across both continents, addressing a broader range of societal challenges through mathematical research.
The inaugural CoRE-Math conference will bring together over 49 academic institutions from 27 countries to reflect on the program's first-year achievements and strategize for future growth. The event will also serve as a platform for policymakers to explore the cluster's contributions to the AU-EU Innovation Agenda.
Jan Palmowski, Secretary-General of The Guild, highlighted the initiative's significance: "CoRE-Math represents a new level of transcontinental collaboration. The expertise of this cluster will not only strengthen mathematics but also enhance the entire CoRE initiative."
John Gyapong, Secretary-General of ARUA, added: "Mathematics has not always been at the forefront of STEM research in Africa, but CoRE-Math will change that. This partnership is key to revolutionizing research and doctoral training across the continent."
The CoRE-Math initiative marks a major step forward in advancing mathematical research and education, fostering Africa-Europe collaboration to tackle global challenges through innovation.
