The African School of Governance (ASG) has officially launched in Kigali, Rwanda, marking a significant stride towards strengthening leadership across the continent with a focus on locally adapted solutions. The school, founded under the African School of Governance Foundation (ASGF), aims to equip emerging and established leaders with the tools needed to address Africa’s unique governance challenges.
ASG was established by a coalition of influential African figures, including Rwandan President H.E. Paul Kagame and former Ethiopian Prime Minister H.E. Hailemariam Desalegn. They envision ASG as a critical institution to promote governance models that reflect Africa’s needs. Under the leadership of Professor Kingsley Moghalu, former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, ASG will blend African perspectives with global governance strategies to prepare leaders who can drive sustainable development across the continent.
The institution’s offerings include a Master of Public Administration (MPA) and an Executive MPA for mid-career professionals and senior executives, respectively, alongside the Young Leaders Program and Senior Leadership Fellowship, catering to various career stages. These programs incorporate Africa’s socio-economic landscape, providing a comprehensive understanding of regional governance dynamics.
“The African School of Governance will be a hub where leaders develop skills that reflect Africa’s unique challenges,” said H.E. Hailemariam Desalegn. ASG’s mission is further supported by policy and research centres, including the Centre for Home-Grown Innovations and the Centre for Trade and Regional Integration, both dedicated to creating actionable solutions for Africa.
Located in Kigali, ASG is positioned to shape governance conversations both within Africa and globally, fostering leaders who are prepared to enact meaningful, sustainable change.
