Pan African University and Hiroshima University Forge Landmark Research Partnership

The Pan African University (PAU) and Japan’s Hiroshima University (HU) have entered into a groundbreaking partnership to promote research and academic collaboration between Africa and Japan. Signed by PAU Rector Prof. Jean Koulidiati and HU President Dr. Mitsuo Ochi, the agreement aims to bolster research capacity and foster cross-continental academic exchanges in key areas such as basic sciences, governance, and space research.

A highlight of the collaboration is the introduction of a joint supervision program for master’s and doctoral students. Each year, five students from each of PAU’s specialized institutes will be selected to undertake research projects under the co-supervision of academics from both institutions. The program offers a unique opportunity for African scholars to spend up to one year at Hiroshima University, gaining exposure to advanced research practices and methodologies.

“This collaboration represents a significant milestone in building Africa’s research capacity while strengthening ties between Japan and the continent,” said Prof. Koulidiati. He emphasized that the initiative aligns with PAU’s mission to develop high-quality education and research across Africa and expand international academic networks.

The partnership includes strong financial support for participating students. PAU will provide monthly stipends of $500 for master’s students and $800 for doctoral students, while Hiroshima University will waive tuition fees. This financial structure ensures that the program remains accessible to talented African scholars.

Dr. Mitsuo Ochi highlighted the long-term vision of the partnership, stating, “This collaboration will not only contribute to scientific innovation but also nurture future leaders capable of addressing global challenges.” Both institutions have pledged to support students in publishing their research in international journals, reinforcing the academic rigour and impact of the initiative.

Beyond student exchanges, the agreement paves the way for broader academic cooperation, including joint research projects, curriculum development, and the exchange of teaching methodologies. The partnership is expected to enhance the academic infrastructure at both universities, creating a sustainable model for research excellence and collaboration.

With an initial term of three years, the renewable agreement sets a precedent for Japan-Africa partnerships in higher education. By combining Africa’s growing research talent with Japan’s technological expertise, the collaboration aims to tackle pressing global challenges while cultivating a new generation of globally competitive researchers.
