AAS and UNITAR Join Forces to Advance Science4Peace in Africa

The African Academy of Sciences (AAS) and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) have announced a pioneering partnership aimed at leveraging science, technology, and innovation to promote peace and sustainable development across Africa. The collaboration, known as Science4Peace, will focus on advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

Speaking on the partnership, UNITAR’s Assistant Secretary-General Nikhil Seth underscored the vital role of science and diplomacy in tackling global challenges. "Science and diplomacy are essential tools in our collective quest for peace and sustainable development. Through this partnership with AAS, we are committed to supporting African leadership in driving scientific solutions that address global challenges and advance peace for all," he said.

The initiative aims to address underlying causes of conflict, such as resource scarcity, health crises, and climate-induced displacement, by fostering interdisciplinary research and promoting science diplomacy. It emphasizes the creation of positive peace, which includes social justice, inclusive development, and environmental sustainability while working to remove barriers to scientific collaboration.

Professor Lise Korsten, President of AAS, described the partnership as a transformative step. "This partnership is a significant step forward in empowering African scientists to lead global efforts in addressing the nexus between science and peace. Together with UNITAR, we aim to catalyze innovation and collaboration that will contribute to sustainable peace and development on the continent," she remarked.

The collaboration will include tailored training programs on science diplomacy, equipping scientists with conflict-sensitive skills, and fostering interdisciplinary research in critical areas such as climate action, public health, and education. These efforts are designed to address Africa’s pressing challenges while fostering inclusive development and equitable access to scientific advancements.

Additionally, the partnership seeks to combat the brain drain of African scientists by creating supportive environments that encourage them to contribute to the continent’s growth. It also aims to ensure marginalized communities benefit from scientific innovations and developments.

As part of the initiative, UNITAR and AAS will organize science diplomacy events, training workshops, and research programs to inspire and equip a new generation of African scientists and policymakers. By integrating science and diplomacy, the partnership aspires to position Africa as a leader in peacebuilding and sustainable development on the global stage.
