In a bold move to strengthen collaboration between academia, industry, and policymakers, the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), in partnership with the African Union Commission and the AfCFTA Secretariat, has launched the African Research and Innovation Hub @IATF. The initiative seeks to bridge the long-standing gap between research and commercialization, ensuring that African innovations directly contribute to intra-African trade and industrialization.
The hub is designed as a platform for scholars, researchers, and students from Africa, the Caribbean, and the Diaspora to showcase their work and connect with industry leaders. By fostering collaboration among universities, research institutions, policymakers, and businesses, the initiative aims to translate academic research into practical, market-ready solutions that can drive Africa’s economic growth.
Despite the wealth of talent across the continent, many African researchers face significant challenges in commercializing their ideas, primarily due to limited funding, weak industry linkages, and a lack of investor support. The African Research and Innovation Hub aims to change this by exposing national researchers to venture capitalists, policymakers, and corporate stakeholders who can help turn their innovations into viable business solutions.
In addition to providing a space for showcasing research, the hub will offer access to critical data and insights on intra-African trade trends, ensuring that academic work remains relevant, impactful, and aligned with Africa’s economic priorities. These insights will also be integrated into university curricula and research programs, helping institutions to produce graduates equipped with the skills needed to drive industrialization and trade expansion.
To further encourage innovation, Afreximbank has introduced a competitive component within the hub. Researchers and students are invited to submit their work, which will be evaluated by a distinguished panel of trade experts, industry leaders, and academics. The submissions will be assessed based on their originality, relevance to intra-African trade, and commercial viability. Those selected will have the opportunity to present their research to an international audience, potentially securing strategic partnerships and investment opportunities that could lead to large-scale implementation of their work.
Kanayo Awani, Executive Vice President for Intra-African Trade and Export Development at Afreximbank, highlighted the transformative potential of the initiative, stating that IATF2025 marks a pivotal moment for African research and innovation. "By bringing together the brightest minds from universities and research institutions, we are creating a groundbreaking platform for the commercialization of African innovations. This is more than just an exhibition—it is a unique opportunity to shape the future of intra-African trade and industrialization, fostering economic growth across the continent," she emphasized.
As preparations for IATF2025 in Algeria continue, the hub is expected to attract participation from academic institutions, policymakers, and industry leaders across Africa and the Diaspora. The long-term goal is to establish a self-sustaining ecosystem of research-driven industrial development, ensuring that African innovations take centre stage in global trade and economic transformation.
