The African Academy of Sciences (AAS) has inducted 88 distinguished researchers and scholars into its prestigious Fellowship, reinforcing its commitment to advancing scientific excellence across the continent. The new Fellows, representing the classes of 2023 and 2024, have been selected for their remarkable contributions to scientific research, technological advancements, and policy development both in Africa and globally.

The rigorous, merit-based election process recognizes individuals who have made significant impacts within their respective fields. The newly inducted Fellows span a wide array of academic disciplines, reflecting the diverse and expansive nature of scientific inquiry across Africa’s ten disciplinary clusters.

With this new cohort, the AAS strengthens its network of leading scientists dedicated to advancing knowledge, fostering collaboration, and addressing critical challenges facing Africa. The Academy plays a central role in supporting research that drives innovation and sustainable development, aligning with key continental priorities such as climate resilience, health systems strengthening, and food security.

Professor Lise Korsten, President of the AAS, welcomed the new Fellows, emphasizing their role in shaping the future of African scientific research. "These exceptional scholars bring a wealth of expertise that will be instrumental in propelling the continent’s research and development agenda. Their leadership and dedication to knowledge generation will be key in tackling Africa’s most pressing challenges through science, technology, and innovation," she said.

The 88 newly elected Fellows include 72 full Fellows and 16 Associate Fellows, representing a variety of disciplines. Although gender disparities persist, with 16 female and 72 male scholars among the elected, the Academy remains committed to promoting greater inclusivity in the scientific community.

AAS Fellows not only contribute to groundbreaking research but also play a crucial role in mentoring the next generation of scientists and influencing policies that drive sustainable development across the continent. Their election to the Academy marks recognition of their scientific impact and commitment to advancing Africa’s development through science and innovation.

With the addition of these 88 new Fellows, the African Academy of Sciences continues to expand its influence, championing initiatives that promote research excellence and ensuring Africa remains a prominent player in the global scientific arena.
