African Academy of Sciences and Spanish National Research Council Forge Partnership to Boost Scientific Cooperation

The African Academy of Sciences (AAS) has entered into a strategic partnership with the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) through a newly signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing scientific cooperation between Africa and Spain. The agreement, signed under the auspices of CSIC's Vice-Presidency for Internationalisation and Cooperation, is set to strengthen collaboration in scientific research, innovation, and technology over the next five years.

Based in Nairobi, Kenya, the AAS is a non-political, non-profit organization dedicated to leveraging science, technology, and innovation for Africa's sustainable development. It is known for recognizing scientific excellence, awarding scholarships, and implementing key Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) programs, making it a pivotal entity in Africa's scientific community.

The partnership with CSIC, a leading research agency under Spain's Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities, establishes a framework for future negotiations and collaborative agreements between the two organizations. The MoU aims to foster joint scientific and technological research, organize academic courses and conferences, and promote the joint publication of scientific articles. It also includes provisions for postgraduate programs and research and training stays for personnel from both institutions.

This collaboration is part of CSIC’s broader initiative to strengthen ties with African institutions as part of its internationalization strategy. It aligns with the CSIC Programme for Scientific Cooperation for Development i-COOP+, launched in 2011, which seeks to advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by enhancing scientific and technical capacities in countries receiving Official Development Assistance (ODA).

The partnership highlights the commitment of both the African Academy of Sciences and CSIC to foster meaningful scientific exchange and build enduring capacities that contribute to sustainable development in Africa and beyond.
