Africa's Climate and Health Challenges Take Center Stage at Landmark Harare Conference

The inaugural Climate and Health Africa Conference (CHAC) 2024 has officially convened in Harare, Zimbabwe, uniting over 400 policymakers, scientists, and climate experts from across Africa under the theme, *"Cultivating Resilience in Health: Towards Unified, Equitable Strategies for Climate Adaptation and Mitigation in Africa."Over three days, the event aims to address the critical intersections between climate change and health in Africa, emphasizing the need for coordinated solutions to protect vulnerable populations as climate impacts intensify.

With delegates from all 54 African nations, CHAC 2024 serves as a pivotal platform for amplifying Africa’s collective voice in the global climate discussion. The conference underscores the importance of a continent-wide approach to climate adaptation, with an emphasis on climate-sensitive health policies. Organized in collaboration with the Climate and Health Africa Network for Collaboration and Engagement (CHANCE), CHAC 2024 offers a forum for vital networking and knowledge-sharing, with CHANCE facilitating research and policy development that strengthens regional responses to climate-health challenges.

“Africa’s health systems must be equipped with scientific insights to drive sustainable, context-specific interventions,” noted Evelyn Gitau, Chief Scientific Officer of the Science for Africa Foundation, who highlighted the importance of data-driven policies to bolster resilience. CHAC sessions focus on topics from drought and flooding to public health and food security, aiming to advance practical strategies and policy recommendations.

The conference also spotlights Africa's unique climate position, responsible for just three per cent of global carbon emissions yet experiencing disproportionate climate impacts. Africa faces climate-related economic losses estimated at $440.5 billion annually, according to the African Development Bank, amplifying the urgency for climate adaptation initiatives that address local needs.

As part of CHAC’s anticipated outcomes, leaders aim to publish research findings, establish a framework for an African Health and Climate Declaration, and finalize a regional action plan. With support from international funders and partners like CeSHHAR Zimbabwe and Zimbabwe's Ministries of Environment and Health, the conference is expected to mobilize essential resources to safeguard Africa’s health in a rapidly changing climate.

As discussions continue, attendees remain optimistic that CHAC 2024 will solidify Africa's role in global climate health policy and strengthen its position in the international climate adaptation arena.
