The Consortium of International Agricultural Research Centers (CGIAR) is set to host its first-ever Science Week on sustainable food systems from July 1 to July 5, 2024, at the United Nations complex in Nairobi, Kenya. This landmark event will bring together leading scientists, policymakers, industry experts, and advocates from around the globe to address climate-related challenges affecting global food systems.
CGIAR, the world's largest publicly funded research partnership, is dedicated to securing a sustainable future for food, nutrition, and climate. The Science Week will focus on the urgent need for sustainable solutions as climate change continues to disrupt food, land, and water systems, impacting the lives and livelihoods of farmers and consumers worldwide.
Dr. Ismahane Elouafi, CGIAR Executive Managing Director, emphasized the critical nature of the event, stating, “As climate change disrupts global food, land, and water systems, the need for sustainable solutions has never been more critical. This event offers a unique opportunity to shape the scientific response to the world’s most urgent challenges.”
The week will feature a variety of activities, including keynote speeches, panel discussions, and interactive sessions with leading experts in agriculture, climate science, and food security. Attendees will also participate in Science Talks and workshops showcasing top-tier research and innovations in food, land, and water systems. An exhibition will highlight game-changing innovations benefiting producers and consumers worldwide.
Key activities during the event will include consultations on CGIAR’s proposed research programs for 2025-2030, providing a platform to shape the scientific response to pressing global challenges. Field visits to CGIAR and partner labs and research stations will offer participants a glimpse of science in action.
Networking opportunities will abound, allowing participants to form meaningful, mission-driven partnerships. The event will feature an impressive lineup of speakers, including representatives from the Government of Kenya, the African Union, the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA), and the African Development Bank (AfDB).
The CGIAR Science Week aims to inspire global collaboration and innovation, essential for reimagining a sustainable and healthy future for people and the planet.
