In a bid to strengthen Africa’s climate resilience and cultivate the next generation of environmental leaders, the Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO) has introduced the Climate Research Fund for African Students (CRFAS). The initiative aims to address critical gaps in climate research by providing young scholars with financial resources, mentorship, and access to global knowledge-sharing platforms.
Developed in partnership with the University of Cape Coast (UCC) in Ghana, the Climate Research Fund is designed to equip African students with the necessary tools to develop innovative climate solutions tailored to the continent’s unique environmental challenges. The pilot phase will be launched at UCC, serving as a model for future expansion across Africa.
Desmond Alugnoa, Co-Founder of GAYO, emphasized the transformative potential of the initiative, stating, “This fund is a platform for Africa’s youth to lead in generating knowledge and crafting innovative solutions to tackle our pressing environmental challenges.”
The fund comes at a crucial time, as Africa grapples with rising temperatures, erratic weather patterns, and severe natural disasters. UCC’s Pro Vice-Chancellor, Professor Denis W. Aheto, hailed the initiative as a game-changer in strengthening Africa’s climate response.
"Ghana, in particular, has climate-sensitive sectors such as agriculture, forestry, marine, and coastal economies that require urgent climate action," Prof. Aheto stated. He further noted that the fund would enhance students’ research capabilities, enabling them to contribute meaningfully to climate solutions.
Joshua Amponsem, Founder of GAYO, highlighted the broader significance of the initiative, pointing to the long-standing underfunding of African research institutions. “For too long, our academic institutions have been under-resourced, limiting their ability to support ambitious climate research. This initiative will provide an opportunity for young Africans to become innovators and leaders in the green transition,” he said.
The Climate Research Fund is part of the larger Africa Youth Climate Fund (AYCF), a youth-led financing initiative that supports underfunded, community-driven climate solutions across the continent. The AYCF channels its funding through three key thematic programs:
- The Africa Climate Innovations Challenge
- The Solidarity Fund
- The Climate Research Fund for African Students (CRFAS)
By integrating CRFAS into the Africa Youth Climate Fund, GAYO aims to bridge funding gaps and shift decision-making power to young climate leaders. Through a participatory grantmaking approach, AYCF ensures that grassroots climate solutions receive the financial backing needed to drive sustainable change at the local level.
By investing in youth-led research and innovation, GAYO and its partners are laying the foundation for a more sustainable and climate-conscious future for Africa.
