The African Academy of Sciences (AAS) has announced the election of its Secretary General, Professor Friday Okonofua, to the National Academy of Medicine (NAM), one of the highest honors in health and medical sciences. Prof. Okonofua, an esteemed expert in reproductive health, joins a distinguished group of international professionals recognized for their transformative contributions to global health.
As the head of the Center of Excellence in Reproductive Health Innovation at the University of Benin in Nigeria, Prof. Okonofua has spearheaded groundbreaking research in maternal health and mortality prevention. His impactful findings have shaped health policies and programs across African nations, emphasizing interventional and implementation research. His leadership extends beyond Nigeria, influencing the continent's reproductive health standards and practices.
Election to NAM honors those with exceptional professional achievements and a steadfast commitment to advancing healthcare. Since its inception in 1970, NAM, part of the United States National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, has focused on addressing critical global health challenges, scientific developments, and related policies.
NAM President Victor J. Dzau praised the recent cohort of inductees, stating, “This class of new members represents the most exceptional researchers and leaders in health and medicine, who have made significant breakthroughs, led the response to major public health challenges, and advanced health equity. Their expertise will be necessary to support NAM’s work to address the pressing health and scientific challenges we face today.”
