SA-UK Bilateral Research Chair in Digital Humanities Launched by NRF and British Academy

The National Research Foundation (NRF) of South Africa, in collaboration with the British Academy and supported by the International Science Partnership Fund, has unveiled the SA-UK Bilateral Research Chair in Digital Humanities. This initiative aims to foster partnerships between South African and UK institutions, promoting a collaborative exploration of the integration and impact of digital technologies within the humanities.

The Research Chair is designed to support scholars in examining how digital technologies influence and transform humanities research. It focuses on two primary objectives: understanding the necessity of humanities in the digital age, including political and intellectual analyses of digital roles in modern society and the interplay between visual and digital technologies; and developing digital tools and repositories to facilitate the collection, analysis, and dissemination of humanities data. These efforts aim to enhance the quality and accessibility of humanities research.

This initiative is part of the South African Research Chairs Initiative (SARChI), which seeks to strengthen and improve research and innovation capacity at public universities, research councils, and national research facilities. The ultimate goal is to produce high-quality postgraduate students and significant research outputs.

The program invites applications exclusively from South African public universities and institutions, each of which can nominate up to three candidates. The application deadline is June 14, 2024.

For further information, please refer to the Framework and Funding Guide. Applications are submitted through the National Research Foundation (NRF) grants management system.
