The Society for AIDS in Africa (SAA) has unveiled a new mentorship program aimed at nurturing the next generation of African researchers, scientists, and activists in the fight against HIV and AIDS. The initiative invites experienced African scholars and researchers to apply as mentors, offering them the chance to make a meaningful impact on emerging talent in the field.
“This progressive program aims to support emerging talent in HIV and AIDS research while fostering leadership in the field,” said Luc Armand H. Bodea, SAA Coordinator and Director of the International Conference on AIDS and STIs in Africa (ICASA), during an interview with Communication for Development and Advocacy (CDA Consult).
Mentors are expected to play an active role, leading webinars, meeting with their mentees for at least one hour monthly (online or in person), and providing ongoing feedback and guidance. SAA will offer a mentoring guide and an introductory workshop to ensure mentors are well-equipped to build productive and enriching relationships.
Beyond one-on-one mentoring, participants will engage in group sessions and events designed to deepen their understanding of critical issues related to HIV and AIDS. Mentors will provide feedback on research, and presentations, and help foster the leadership skills of their mentees.
“This initiative marks a significant step in empowering African scholars and researchers to take leading roles in the fight against HIV and AIDS,” added Bodea. “By sharing their expertise and passion, mentors can shape the next generation of leaders and change-makers.”
SAA, which coordinates HIV-related activities across Africa, is committed to strengthening partnerships with African states to mitigate the impact of HIV, tuberculosis (TB), and malaria. The organization also promotes research, training, and advocacy against discrimination and stigmatization in HIV and AIDS prevention and care.
