Telkom and National Research Foundation Launch FutureTech Program to Drive South Africa’s Tech Innovation

In a major step toward advancing South Africa's tech innovation ecosystem, Telkom and the National Research Foundation (NRF) have announced the launch of the Future Technologies (FutureTech) program. This collaborative initiative is designed to co-fund research grants and support postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows in pioneering fields, focusing on boosting competitiveness within the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector and other technology-driven industries.

FutureTech builds on the success of the long-standing Telkom Centres of Excellence (CoE) initiative, extending its mission by fostering research and development in next-generation technologies such as fibre optic solutions, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things (IoT). The program is particularly focused on bridging South Africa's ICT skills gap, a critical factor for economic growth and industry sustainability.

“FutureTech is an investment in the future of South Africa’s ICT sector. By equipping students with essential skills, we’re ensuring that South Africa remains competitive on the global stage,” said Althon Beukes, CEO of Openserve, Telkom’s infrastructure division.

NRF CEO Dr Fulufhelo Nelwamondo highlighted the importance of partnerships between academia and industry, stating, “This collaboration allows us to strengthen South Africa’s science and technology capacity while aligning graduates with the needs of the market. The future of South Africa’s tech landscape depends on the capabilities we nurture today.”

FutureTech’s inclusivity efforts will prioritize funding for historically disadvantaged institutions, aiming to enhance diversity and drive transformation within the sector.

The program’s pilot phase will span the next three years, focusing on high-priority areas in tech innovation. By creating critical research opportunities and fostering the next generation of tech leaders, FutureTech aims to help shape South Africa’s technological future and contribute to broader economic and social advancements.
