Times Higher Education 2025 Rankings See Record Growth, African Universities Make Strides

For the first time, over 2,000 universities worldwide will feature in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, with a notable increase in African institutions. The 2025 edition, set for release in October, includes 2,092 universities, reflecting a 9.7% growth from last year. This marks the largest expansion in the past five years, with the number of represented countries and territories rising from 108 to 115.

Africa has made significant progress, with Egypt and Nigeria leading the charge. Egypt added seven new universities, while Nigeria contributed six more. Additionally, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda made their debut in the rankings, marking a milestone for African representation in global academia. In total, 10% of new entrants are from Africa, underscoring the continent's growing influence in higher education.

Globally, India and Turkey saw the largest gains, each adding 16 new institutions, while the United States remains the most represented country, with 174 universities ranked. Asia continues to lead the rankings’ growth, contributing 60% of new entrants over the past five years.

Eligibility changes, such as lowering the research paper requirement, have enabled more institutions to qualify. The full rankings will be revealed on October 9, 2024, showcasing the increasing global competition in higher education.
